My Sunday Best Sweatshirt

It’s Monday. Let’s put on our Sunday best.

“Putting on my Sunday best.” This phrase showed up in the mid-1800s. Historically, people had their work clothes and their everyday clothes. But separated from the rest was one set of clothes they kept clean, reserved, and set apart for Sunday morning. The sentiment was good. The desire was to be intentional and worshipful. To give our best to the Lord, not only in how we act, but in what we wear.

Over time, especially in American church culture, the phrase took on a double meaning. It became shorthand not just for clothes, but for showing up prepared, giving your best attention, and your best effort.

The truth is, our Sunday best should be the start of our heart posture throughout the week.

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men.”

Sunday is the day our full cup overflows. After coming together to worship our Creator, Monday morning is the time to put on our Sunday best.
